'Wild Beasts' @ Champion Contemporary/ Austin, TX / Sept 1 - Oct 8, 2011
Joshua Abelow, Self-Portrait, 2008, Oil on linen 24 x 18"
This looks like a great show from Champion Contemporary in Austin, TX. If you are in the area, go check it out... Here is an excerpt from the press release courtesy of Champion Contemporary:
"Champion is pleased to announce a group exhibition of painting and video entitled Wild Beasts, featuring Ryan Schneider, Daniel Heidkamp, Shara Hughes, Joshua Abelow, and Ezra Johnson. Wild Beasts is the English translation of Les Fauves, a 20th-century movement of painters—including Henri Matisse—known for the use of untamed color and gestural, abstracted brushstrokes applied to portraits and landscapes.
In this spirit Wild Beasts brings together artists who reveal radical dimensions in painting today. The unleashed color, painterly sensibility and tough materiality of their works combine to express personal impulses and inner mythologies. Whether creating structured and color-saturated abstractions or loosely figurative work, these artists engage with the possibilities of paint itself." Via: championcontemporary.com
